Are large vehicles, RVs, or trailers allowed on the Alpine Loop?

Accepted Answer

No. Vehicles longer than 30 feet—including total combined truck-and-trailer length—are restricted due to narrow lanes, blind curves, and tight hairpin switchbacks.
Drivers with large RVs, motorhomes, or long trailers traveling between Utah Valley and Heber Valley should use Provo Canyon (US-189) instead.

Do I have to pay a toll to drive on the Alpine Loop?

Accepted Answer

No. Continuous drive-through traffic along SR-92 is free. A U.S. Forest Service recreation pass ($10 for a 3-day pass) is only required if you park to use trailheads, picnic sites, or campgrounds.

Are there seasonal road closures for the Alpine Loop?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Alpine Loop (SR-92) is open for the summer months from late May or early June to late October or November, and closes for the winter between Pine Hollow (MP 14) and Aspen Grove (MP 22). The opening and closure of the Alpine Loop is dependent on snow and road maintenance resources.

What is a full canyon avalanche closure and what travel is allowed?

Accepted Answer

A full canyon closure is one where travel is closed to both uphill and downhill traffic, typically as a result of high avalanche hazard or the need for avalanche control work.
Only authorized personnel are allowed in the canyon, including UDOT road operations and avalanche crews, law enforcement and emergency vehicles.

Who is not permitted to travel in the canyon during an avalanche closure?

Accepted Answer

The public, including but not limited to residents, ski resort traffic (employees and visitors) and backcountry users. All uphill and downhill traffic is required to wait until the canyon is open to public travel.
